Salzkammergut Experiences

We had a wonderful week in the Salzkammergut in June 2009. Our group included several people who have traveled with us in Provence, and it was great to share another experience with old friends. This was an active week, including trips to the top of the two mountains on either side of beautiful Lake Wolfgang. At the end of the week we spent a day in the isolated village of Hallstatt. We rode the funicular up the mountain to the salt mines, where we wore special clothes to explore the ancient mine deep inside the mountain.

Everyone enjoyed our guesthouse in the heart of the village, and we especially appreciated the hospitality of our hostess Monica and her nephew Michael who runs the coffee shop.

One of the unexpected highlights of the week was the Fronleichnam or Corpus Christi holiday. Parishes all over Austria hold special processions and church services, involving various associations and societies, all in their special uniforms and native costumes. We adjusted our plans for the morning to stay in St. Gilgen and watch the festivities just outside our front door. (Read more about the Fronleichnam celebration in St. Gilgen here.)

We’re looking forward to returning to St. Gilgen in July 2010. It’s a lovely time of year to enjoy the Austrian alps.
